Artistic Statement for the Residency Project

As human-AI interaction becomes increasingly routine, emotions are being recoded within technological interfaces. In their iterative exchanges with generative AI, individuals gradually project the interpersonal emotions that ought to be directed at others onto algorithmic agents. This "anthropomorphized relationship" alters not only the objects of human emotion, but also the way humans are understood by themselves.

As Baudrillard put it, contemporary society is gradually entering an order dominated by simulacra: reality no longer manifests itself in physical form, but is structured through computable and reproducible images. AI’s emotional feedback mechanisms have further accelerated this process, consigning humans to an increasingly existential state as "images and patterns captureable by algorithms".

Chapter One: "Eternal Love and the Garden of Illusions"

This chapter comprises installations and projected video footage. The artist employs techniques including brainwave data, interactive software and AI-generated imagery to create a series of visualizations of the "kiss" as perceived by AI, and proposes the conceptual strategy of Flowers surviving on the illusory light of AI—an allusion to humanity’s reliance on technological illusions in an accelerated and transparent society.

Chapter Two: Local, Nomadic

Chapter Two: Local, NomadicThis audio-visual interactive video is created from audio-visual materials collected by the artist during field research in the residency area.Rooster crows, dog barks and water sounds are captured; rural crops, flowers and earth textures form the visual elements. Using parallel perspective of traditional Chinese painting, it depicts a harmonious blend of human creation and nature, where the boundaries of identities and categories are blurred, and all things are nomadic.

November 2025 – My Residency Journal

I’d worried the mountainous residency would be cut off from convenient transport – in similar overseas programs, you have to ride a beat-up bike or drive to get out of the hills – but the reality was surprisingly hassle-free. The commute from the residency to nearby amenities, and even to and from Chengdu, is smooth and easy, striking a perfect balance between peace and convenience.

The buildings here are built entirely into the mountainside, bearing no resemblance to traditional villages. Taking an evening stroll in the residential area, I watch the wall hues and the staggered, layered layout follow the mountain’s natural contours, blending seamlessly with its textures. It feels as if the buildings have always been an integral part of the mountains and wilds. On my first day here, the canteen was closed. But the elderly lady who runs the shop across the way not only opened up for me to buy instant noodles, but also boiled hot water for me – and even handed me a shawl, afraid I’d catch a chill.Renli Village teems with agricultural produce.

The local strawberries are sweet and tangy, freshly picked, and far cheaper than those in the country where I studied. I simply bought a whole crate for breakfast and polished it off in no time.I’d originally thought digital nomads would all just bury their heads in their own work, but I never expected such a rich lineup of activities – a cook-off, for one. Every night, nomads gather around the communal kitchen to drink, chat, listen to music and swap stories, with no awkward distance between anyone. If I could stay here long-term, I’d love to take the initiative to host events and immerse myself deeply in this warmth and liveliness.
